Car share

Joining a car share scheme is a great way to save on the cost of car ownership while still maintaining access to a car when you need it.

Car sharing is a cost-effective and more environmentally friendly alternative to owning a car. Research shows that one car share vehicle can replace between seven to ten privately owned vehicles.

This helps reduce congestion, demand for on-street car parking and car dependence. It also promotes sharing of resources and makes non-car-owning lifestyles more viable in Yarra.

How car sharing works

You need to join a car sharing organisation, then you can rent cars on demand – either by the hour or by the day.

What you need to know

  • Members pay each time they use a shared car
  • Cars are parked in special reserved parking spots (called 'pods’)
  • Cars can be booked by phone or on the internet
  • Cars can be booked for trips as short as one hour
  • Petrol, insurance, registration, maintenance and cleaning are included in the hire charge
