Busking and street entertainment are welcome in Yarra! To busk here, you’ll need to apply for a permit, which is issued on a monthly basis.
Our busking conditions and policy [ PDF, 111.55 KB] [PDF 112KB] sets out the conditions for street performances, including volume levels and performance times.
Acceptable volume
Your performance must be at an acceptable volume, so you don't inconvenience the public or businesses in the area.
Your performance is deemed as too loud if it can be clearly heard:
- from the other side of a main street
- within a habitable room.
You are not allowed to use a battery or mains voltage amplification for busking in Yarra.
Terminating performances
Our officers can instruct you to terminate your performance if you don't have a permit or it is:
- too loud
- offensive
- dangerous or harmful to private or public property.
Report a busking performance
Too make a complaint about busking performance, please submit a request with as much information as possible.
Public liability insurance
Public liability insurance is not compulsory for buskers. However, our public liability insurance policy does not cover liability exposures for buskers. This means not having insurance may leave you open to personal liability if a negligent act leads to injury or loss to a third party.
How to apply
Please follow the below steps to apply for a busking permit.

- Step 3: Email the completed application form to [email protected]
How to pay
Once we've approved your application, we'll send you an invoice for the busking permit fee. The fee is $17 a month and is GST-free (monthly fee).
To pay online you must enter your online reference number on your invoice.
