The Federal Government has committed $3.75m for the Linear Park in Fitzroy North.

Peter Khalil MP, Federal Labor Member for Wills announced the funding at Park Street Reserve at Fitzroy North on Sunday 13 April, alongside the City of Yarra Mayor, Stephen Jolly, and Nicholls Ward’s Councillor Ken Gomez.

The funding can support Council to upgrade the playground, incorporating Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung nature play elements for children, and the basketball and volleyball courts. The surrounding parklands can be revitalised with furniture and facilities, and native vegetation and a rain garden.

Mayor Jolly said the funding follows intense lobbying from the Council and signaled out Councillor Gomez for his efforts.

Councillor Gomez says he was thrilled with the Federal Government’s funding commitment.

“It’s wonderful to see the Federal Government investing in our local community,” he said.

“By providing people with more opportunities for recreation and play, we’re improving the health and wellbeing of our community”.

“It was wonderful to see over 100 locals turning out for this announcement including many of my fellow Councillors”.

The upgrades would form part of Yarra City Council’s Linear Park Masterplan which is a 20-year vision to deliver the largest creation of green space in the inner-city.

“Keep an eye out for our community consultation over the coming months to share your input and help shape the design and delivery of upgrades to the park,” said Mayor Jolly.

“Make sure you have your say”.
