Coralie is passionate about reducing food waste at home. As a scientist, she understands the harmful effects of methane that is produced when food ends up in landfill and is active in educating friends, family, and neighbours on how to reduce their own food waste. However, having spent more than 20 years living in share houses, she understands the struggles of getting others to cut down on avoidable food waste.
With some trial and error, Coralie has come up with some effective methods that have worked in curbing wasteful behaviours:
The first step is about finding those who are interested [in their impact on the environment], and then it’s about educating them on how they can reduce avoidable food waste, one small change at a time.
In her latest share house, Coralie set up a food scraps bin for her housemates to deposit their leftovers and food scraps to be taken to her local composting facility at the Carlton Neighborhood Centre. She’s also helped another housemate reduce their food waste by sending them regular reminders to freeze their old bananas until it became a habit.
Coralie is one of our Food Waste Champions and participated in Yarra’s Food Waste Challenge last year.
