At its February Council Meeting, Yarra City Council passed a resolution to change the delegation of approving the removal of angled parking across Yarra, requiring additional decisions in relation to any removal to come to a Council meeting for a decision.
“The Yarra community has made it clear that angled parking is important for local business and for those in our community that use them” said Mayor, Stephen Jolly.
“Late last year, this Council made a commitment to shine a light on this issue and make sure that any decision that impacted angled parking be done in consultation with the community,” he said.
As proposals that impact on street parking are usually the result of works to widen footpaths or improve pedestrian and cycling safety. Quite often, this can impact the amount of space for parking.
As a result, Council determined that the best way to protect space for angled parking, relevant decisions should go before them in many instances. Exceptions would be made, such as for works that won’t result in a loss of angled parking or temporary changes required for emergency management.
