The Victorian Government has announced that funding for the iconic Victoria's Pride Street Party is continuing, preserving it as a fixture of LGBTQ+ calendar in the heart of Fitzroy.
This comes after years of advocacy by Midsumma, Yarra City Council, and many others to secure the event as a permanent part of Victoria’s Midsumma lineup.
Minister for Equality Vicki Ward and Minister for Mental Health Ingrid Stitt attended the event on Sunday 8 February to make the announcement. They were joined by Yarra’s Deputy Mayor Sharon Harrison.
Victoria’s Pride Street Party is a celebration of progress, love and diversity, located on Smith and Gertrude Streets in Fitzroy. It is a full day of LGBTQIA+ art, live music, performances, community and culture, with stalls showcasing local treasures.
Yarra is a proud LGBTIQA+ precinct of Melbourne, where 15% of residents identify as LGBTIQA+.
Council is pleased that the Victorian Government has responded to its calls, and the calls of the Victorian LGBTIQA+ community, to make this event a permanent fixture.
“Yarra has long been shaped, strengthened and inspired by its LGBTIQA+ communities. This is a place where diversity isn’t just welcomed, it’s part of who we are,” said Yarra’s Deputy Mayor, Sharon Harrison.
“Because Yarra is a better place with a strong LGBTIQA+ community. A more creative place. A more compassionate place. A more joyful place.”
