This week, our much-loved statue of Ian “Molly” Meldrum was reinstated at Wangaratta Street Park in Richmond.
Late last year, the statue was damaged and had to undergo repairs.
Yarra City Council Mayor Stephen Jolly says the statue, just like the man, is an iconic part of Richmond’s landscape and the City of Yarra’s creative spirit.
“As a promoter and advocate of Australia’s live music industry - Molly is an icon of Australian music – and it’s only fitting that his statue be located near the Corner Hotel, where lots of Australian musicians got their start,” he says.
“We’re thrilled that Molly, complete with his trademark Stetson hat and his beloved dog Ziggy, are back in Richmond, where they belong,” he says.
Created by Australian sculptor Louis Laumen and fabricated by Meridian Foundry in Fitzroy, the bronze statue was instigated by Meldrum’s long-time friend and supporter Ralph Carr and was commissioned by Yarra City Council.
The bronze statue was created with the support of Creative Partnerships Australia, the Victorian Government and Molly’s many fans and friends.
