Golden Square Bicentennial Park, a small reserve in the heart of the historically significant Golden Square precinct in Burnley, will be upgraded with new play equipment and landscaping after Yarra City Council last night approved the Final Concept Design.
“Locals told us that they wanted the new playground to have more play options for more ages and abilities, and more shade and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” said City of Yarra Mayor, Stephen Jolly.
The design of the new playground improves accessibility, includes more play options for more ages and abilities, as well as providing better shade with the addition of nine mature trees. The cubby will also get a facelift, with new materials that will make it easier to keep clean.
“Residents also made it clear to us just how significant the ‘Fairy Tree’ is to the park, which I think is one of the most beautiful trees in Yarra,” said Mayor Jolly.
The new design will emphasise this significance through ‘mini beasts’ and stone etchings within the park to celebrate the tree.
The Mayor also paid tribute to the late Ron and Shirley Pinnell who worked tirelessly to secure the site for community use following the demolition of Burnley Primary School, saying that none of this would’ve been possible without their enduring contribution.
