Member for Cooper visits Yambla Pavilion ahead of upgrade
11 Apr 2025

This week, Yarra City Council welcomed the Federal Member for Cooper, Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care and Assistant Minister for Indigenous Health, the Hon Ged Kearney MP to tour the Yambla Pavilion. Yambla Pavilion is one of Council’s sporting facilities located at Quarries Park in Cliffton Hill.

After sustained advocacy from Council, the Australian Government has provided $2.25 million via its Thriving Suburbs program to upgrade the facility.

Assistant Minister Kearney was welcomed by Yarra’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Sarah McKenzie, Football Club Clifton Hill Football Club’s Senior & Junior President, Michael Tyrikos and a number of players from the club's women's program.

Mr Tyrikos explained the club’s history and how important it is that community sport facilities are kept up to date with the community’s expectations. The Assistant Minister spoke at length with the representatives from the women's program about their excitement for the new facility, which has been many years in the making.

Yambla Pavilion was built in the 1980s for one purpose – men’s soccer. This new funding will allow Council to construct a safe, inclusive and accessible facility so that residents and visitors of all ages, genders and abilities can participate.

The upgrade will include:

  • four player changerooms,
  • referee and first aid facilities,
  • carparking,
  • a viewing deck to the soccer field, and
  • canteen-kitchen and other public amenities.

Assistant Minister for Health & Aged Care and Assistant Minister for Indigenous Health & the Federal Member for Cooper, Ged Kearney said:

Community sporting facilities are the heartbeat of our community.

For too long, they haven’t been accessible for women, but thankfully that’s changing. I know this investment by the Albanese Labor Government will go a long way to supporting women’s sport, Football Club Clifton Hill and our local community.

This new Australian Government funding to upgrade Yambla Pavilion will be used alongside a Victorian Government grant for $500,000, awarded as part of their World Game Facilities Fund 2021-22.
