Yarra City Council is helping to combat social isolation among our Italian community through a weekly social group where seniors can gather, do activities, share experiences, and stay connected to each other and their culture. 

The group is designed to foster connections and friendships through a variety of activities like board games, gardening, cooking, and group outings. The group provides a space for seniors to socialise but also provides the group with an opportunity to celebrate Italian language, culture and shared heritage.

Valeria Palmieri facilitates the group. She says the group plays an important role in the community.

So many older people experience loneliness and isolation. Our Italian social group ensures older Italian people in our community stay socially active and mentally engaged, she says.

We provide a supportive environment where seniors can reminisce about their shared past and culture, learn new skills, and pass down traditional Italian recipes. For participants, it’s more than just a weekly catch-up, it’s an opportunity to preserve their culture, make lasting connections, and enjoy the benefits of staying active in their golden years, Valeria says.

Nunzia Calderone loves coming to the Italian social group at Willowview.

We get treated with great respect and dignity here, and I'm happy to share my life experiences with the group. For many of us, it's the highlight of our week, she says.

Yolanda Mandarano started coming to Willowview several years ago but had to stop attending temporarily after fall.  

Since rejoining the group, I’ve gained so much confidence and have learned so many new things! The staff work with us to create the program. I’m always so happy to come to Willowview each week and spend time with my friends, she says.
