Yarra City Council is committed to flying flags which align with the values of the community we represent.
Flags symbolise identity, ensure people in our community feel seen and heard, promote respect and inclusion, raise awareness and create a sense of community pride.
Yarra City Council’s Town Halls at Collingwood, Fitzroy and Richmond fly three official flags:
- Australian National flag
- Australian Aboriginal flag
- Torres Strait Islander flag
In addition, each Town Hall has a civic flagpole. This is reserved for the flying of flags that symbolise and celebrate the diverse Yarra community or have special meaning to all or part of our community.
The following flags are flown on civic flagpoles throughout the year:

- Collingwood Football Club flag
- Eureka flag
- Flag of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic
- Flag of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

- Lesbian Pride flag
- Morning Star flag
- Non Binary Pride flag
- Pansexual Pride flag
- Richmond Football Club flag
- Transgender flag
- United Nations flag
- Vietnamese Yellow flag
All flags are flown in accordance with Yarra City Council's Civic Flag Policy [ PDF, 708.39 KB] .
Flags at half-mast
Flags are flown at half-mast as a sign of respect.
Yarra City Council follows the agreed national protocol and notifications provided from the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet or the Commonwealth Flag Network.
Australian flags are flown at half-mast to acknowledge the passing of:
- a Councillor
- a former Mayor of the Council or any of the former Cities of Collingwood, Fitzroy and Richmond
- a member or former member of federal or state parliament who held a seat in an electorate in Yarra
- an outstanding local citizen
The Australian Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag are flown at half-mast on:
- 26 January
- 15 April (commemorating the anniversary of the release of ‘National Report of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody’ 15 April 1991)
- 26 May (commemorating ‘National Sorry Day’ and the anniversary of the tabling in the Commonwealth Parliament of ‘Bringing Them Home: Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families’ 26 May 1997)
The Australian National Flag is removed on those dates.
