Civic events and dates of significance
At Yarra City Council, we recognise that our community is strengthened by its diversity, shared values and collective experiences.
Throughout the year, Council acknowledges and celebrates a range of civic events, awareness days and cultural festivals that reflect the many identities, histories, cultures and causes represented across our municipality.
These recognitions help foster inclusion, respect and belonging. They provide opportunities for community education, celebration, reflection and solidarity, while also supporting social cohesion and civic participation. By acknowledging important dates and events, Council aims to create a welcoming and respectful community where people from all backgrounds feel seen, valued and connected.
Council recognises a broad range of occasions, including:
National and international awareness days
Cultural and religious festivals
Commemorative and remembrance events
Civic and community celebrations
Events that promote inclusion, equity, health, wellbeing and human rights
How Council decides which dates to recognise
Council’s Executive Leadership team meet annually to consider and endorse a list of civic events, awareness dates and campaigns that will be formally acknowledged in the upcoming calendar year.
The dates considered are informed by the priorities and interests of the Yarra community, as well as being guided by Council policies, strategic priorities.
In considering whether to recognise a particular event, awareness day or festival, Council may take into account:
Relevance to the Yarra community
Alignment with Council’s values, strategies and commitments
The significance and reach of the event locally, nationally or internationally
Opportunities to promote inclusion, education and community wellbeing
Whether the event supports diversity, equity and social cohesion
Availability of Council resources and operational considerations
Previously endorsed recognitions (such as Council’s Community Flags)
Council may acknowledge events in a variety of ways, including flag raisings, lighting of Council buildings, public statements, social media communications, community partnerships, civic participation and support for local activities.
Principles guiding recognition
Council uses the following principles when determining which dates and events to acknowledge:
Inclusion and respect
Council seeks to recognise and celebrate the diversity of cultures, identities, faiths and experiences within the community in a respectful and inclusive way.
Community benefit
Acknowledgements should contribute positively to community connection, awareness, understanding or wellbeing.
Equity and human rights
Council supports initiatives and events that promote fairness, dignity, accessibility and respect for human rights.
Civic responsibility
Recognition activities should align with Council’s role as a public authority and support community harmony, democratic values and social cohesion.
Transparency and consistency
Decisions are made in accordance with Council policies, priorities and available resources.
Council recognises that not every date of significance can be formally acknowledged each year. However, we remain committed to working with our community to celebrate the diversity, strengths and shared values that make Yarra a vibrant and inclusive place to live, work and visit.
