Responsible consumption of alcohol

Information on consuming alcohol responsibly while helping keep Yarra's public spaces safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.
Edinburgh Gardens

Yarra is home to vibrant parks, public spaces, events and hospitality venues. We support the responsible consumption of alcohol in public places while balancing the needs of residents, visitors and businesses.

Our Community Local Law helps ensure everyone can safely enjoy Yarra's public spaces and shared amenities.

Parks and public places

You may consume alcohol in public parks and reserves between 9.00am and 9.00pm, unless otherwise signed or restricted by Council.

If you are planning a large gathering, event or intend to sell alcohol, you may need a permit from Council and approvals from other authorities.

Alcohol consumption is prohibited:

  • on roads (excluding footpaths), including while in a vehicle
  • within 10 metres of entrances to schools, childcare centres, libraries, Maternal and Child Health Centres and similar family focused facilities
  • in locations or areas where temporary Council restrictions apply.

Respecting our public spaces

When enjoying alcohol in a public space, please:

  • respect nearby residents and other park users
  • keep noise to a reasonable level
  • dispose of rubbish appropriately
  • follow any directions or signage that apply to the area.

New Years Eve, AFL Grand Final and area restrictions

During New Year's Eve and AFL Grand final period, restrictions apply:

  • across all public places in Yarra from 9.00pm on 30 December until 9.00am on 1 January
  • in parts of Richmond and Cremorne surrounding the AFL Grand Final period (see map)

Council may also introduce temporary restrictions where necessary to support community safety and amenity. Any restrictions will be published on this page of Council's website.

Licensed venues and events

Alcohol restrictions under the Community Local Law do not apply within or immediately outside licensed venues or at Council approved events where alcohol consumption is permitted.

Public intoxication

Victoria's response to public intoxication is health-and focuses on connecting people with support and care rather than penalties.

If you are concerned about someone who appears intoxicated and may need assistance, contact emergency services on Triple Zero (000) if there is an immediate risk to their safety or the safety of others.

For more information about Victoria's public intoxication, visit the Victorian Government's public intoxication information page.
