If items are not available at Yarra Libraries or through our shared collections, we are often able to borrow them from other libraries on your behalf through an inter-library loan.

Know the title, publication date and format of the item you are requesting

Submit the request form (this can also be found in our catalogue as 'send a request' at the top-right of the main menu)

- you may have 4 inter-library loans in process at any one time. This total includes requests and items on loan.
- there is no charge for inter-library loans obtained from public libraries in Victoria, and some interstate public libraries. Any charges from an interstate public library will be discussed with customers before a request is placed.
- there may be a fee for items borrowed from Australian academic or special libraries. See our fees and charges.
- we do not offer inter-library loans from overseas libraries.
- partial and digital memberships do not have access to inter-library loans.
- requested items can only be collected from a Yarra Libraries branch and are not transferable within the Libraries Victoria network.
- Yarra Libraries has no control over what other lending libraries may or may not lend, response times from lending libraries, their loan conditions or the length of loan periods.
- new release titles may not be available via inter-library lending. If the new item you're looking for isn't in our catalogue, please ask us to purchase a copy on your behalf via the 'Suggest an item' form.

For items in languages not available through Yarra Libraries or Libraries Victoria, please send an email request to [email protected] with your contact details and information about the language, the amount (e.g. 10 books) and the types of items (e.g. fiction books or books for children) you are wanting to borrow.
We will investigate options to borrow these items from another library for you.
You can have 4 inter-library loans in process at any one time. This total includes requests and items on loan.
Some items cannot be requested if they belong to another library service.
Items that cannot be requested includes:
- board books
- picture books
- music CDs
- magazines
- items in languages other than English (LOTE), with the exception of LOTE magazines.
It can take up to 8 weeks, depending on the lending library.
You can send an email to interlibraryloans@yarracity.vic.gov.au and we'll cancel your inter-library loan request.Â
Please ask library staff to check for messages on your library card. You can also send an email to interlibraryloans@yarracity.vic.gov.au and library staff will respond with an update.
Inter-library loans are usually available for 3 weeks, depending on the loan period granted by the lending library.
Automatic renewals are not available for inter-library loan.
A renewal may be requested one week in advance of the due date. You can request a renewal via email to interlibraryloans@yarracity.vic.gov.au. We will ask the lending library, but we have no control of their decision.
