Works have begun on site to construct the new multilevel Fitzroy Sports Centre.

Yarra City Council is working in partnership with the Victorian Government to deliver the new multi-purpose facility in Fitzroy.

The project will provide much needed new sport and community facilities in the inner-city. The centre will feature four multi-purpose courts over two levels, a 1,000-plus square metre gymnasium, café and lounge area, community facilities, change rooms, umpire change rooms and reception.

The multipurpose sports centre has been developed in consultation with key stakeholders Volleyball Victoria, Basketball Victoria, Netball Victoria and Football Victoria.

Council which advocated strongly for the new facility over many years, has provided $5 million towards the project with the remaining $49.5 million committed by the Victorian Government.

Council will also manage the facility once construction is completed.

Yarra City Council Mayor Cr Sophie Wade expressed her excitement to see this step in the delivering of the new facility taking shape.

“Council has been a long-term advocate for this project and it is great to see works beginning,” Cr Wade said.

“We need greater investment in sport and recreation facilities across Yarra and the inner-city and the Fitzroy Sports Centre will play an important role as a both a local and regional sporting facility in the years to come.”

The project forms part of the Fitzroy Gasworks Precinct and the sports centre will be designed and constructed to integrate with the two indoor sports courts at the newly opened Wurun Senior Campus, to enable shared use and create a six-court facility outside of school hours.

The innovative vertical design of the sports centre comes in response to the demand for sports facilities in built-up inner-city areas where land is scarce and comes at a premium.
