Yarra scores a goal with new park

Sunday 02 October 2022

Yarra City Council welcomed the official opening of the new Fairlea Netball Precinct in Yarra Bend Park.

The precinct features eight netball courts with supporting facilities including lighting, seating, shelters and upgrades to local road access, as well as a new modular sporting pavilion which has been named the Fiona Richardson Pavilion.

Yarra City Council Mayor Cr. Sophie Wade welcomed the investment in grassroots, community sports.
“Today’s opening is a fantastic outcome for local netball and the Yarra community more broadly,” Cr Wade said.

“We know that greater investment in local sports facilities within the inner metropolitan region is needed, particularly those which encourage greater participation of women and girls in sport."

“The new netball courts will provide additional capacity for training and games in an area experiencing both major population growth and an ever-rising interest in the sport.”

The Fairlea Netball Precinct redevelopment was funded by $8 million from the Victorian Government as part of the Inner-City Netball Program.

This new precinct will increase the supply of fit for purpose netball facilities across Melbourne and cater for increased participation and future growth of the sport.

In June 2022, Council supported a proposal to take on management duties of the upgraded Fairlea Netball Precinct. Further announcements about the long-term management arrangements of the precinct will be made on Council’s website in due course.
