Each year we honour people who make outstanding contributions to our community with Yarra’s Community Awards.

In 2019, Grant Guppy was recognised as our Citizen of the Year, for his work as a member and Vice President of Finbar Neighbourhood House.

Grant volunteered at Finbar for up to four days a week and developed several new community activity groups, which included an ancestry group, ukulele classes and a men’s group designed to help them explore issues in a safe space.

“I was extremely surprised to be nominated and when told I had won the award, it was both a very happy and humbling experience” says Grant.

Since winning the award, Grant say “it has increased my determination to use my skills and seek further opportunities. Volunteering is an incredibly satisfying experience.”

Grant has been a positive role model who encourages others to try new things, offers support and welcomes everyone in the community.

Do you know an individual or group who deserve to be recognised for their outstanding contributions to the Yarra community?

Whether they’re loud and proud or quiet achievers, we want to celebrate them.

Nominating takes less than 10 minutes and could be life changing for an everyday hero.

What are the categories?

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Community Initiative of the Year
  • Contributions to Arts
  • Contributions to Sport
