Gipps Street Bridge closed for works

Tuesday 18 August 2020

While we upgrade the Gipps Street Bridge, pedestrians and cyclists will need to use an alternate route while using the Main Yarra Trail.

Update: Monday 21 September

Works have been completed and the bridge has reopened.

Update: Tuesday 18 August

Due to Stage 4 Restrictions and unforeseen circumstances, these works have been extended and are expected to be completed by Saturday 5 September 2020.

Thank you for your patience while we make upgrades to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Details

Works will begin on Monday 29 June and are expected to take eight weeks to complete, depending on the weather.

The works include:

  • Steel reinforcement of the main span of the bridge
  • Replacement of the existing bridge deck
  • Painting of the bridge structural elements.

Access

The footbridge will be closed to all traffic and will not be accessible for the duration of the works. You'll need to use an alternative route during the time.

The nearest crossing is the Walmer Street Bridge, at the intersection of Victoria and Burnley Streets, Richmond.
