At Yarra’s council meeting on Tuesday 2 April, Mike McEvoy announced his resignation from his role as a Yarra councillor.

Cr McEvoy served as a Nicholls Ward councillor since 2016. He is a member of the Greens party.

He is leaving his role as a councillor to pursue a new employment opportunity at not-for-profit organisation, Climate for Change.

Cr McEvoy said, “I am excited to announce that I have accepted a position at Climate for Change, an independent not-for-profit whose mission is to create the social climate in Australia for effective action on climate change. But there’s sad news too. To ensure the independence of Climate for Change, I am required to stand down from my elected position at Yarra City Council.”

Appointing a new councillor

We will now begin the process of appointing a new councillor in the Nicholls Ward.

We will notify the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC), who will do a count back of votes from the 2016 local government elections. The VEC will determine if an eligible candidate can be appointed based on the count back. This process is expected to take 4-6 weeks.

If no eligible candidate can be determined, a by-election may be required.
