What’s happening now
Works on the upgraded dog park began in February 2026 and the area is planned to re‑open to the community in May 2026.
In February, we are installing the fencing around the site, conducting earthworks and drainage, installing the dog agility features and the drinking fountain.
Some elements of the upgrade will need additional time to properly establish:
New grassed areas will be fenced for up to four extra weeks to allow the turf to take root before dogs can safely use the surface.
New garden bed plantings will also require time to establish strong roots.
These short‑term measures help ensure the long‑term health and durability of the new landscaping.

Frequently asked questions
The entirety of Quarries Park, including Yambla Reserve soccer pitch (outside of organised sporting events and training times), is a designated dog off-leash area.
The large open space network currently lacks facilities to cater for the number of dogs and dog owners that use/pass through the reserve.
The project site was chosen for an upgrade as it is isolated from other park facilities and activities such as the children’s playground, BBQ area, skate park, and share paths, to reduce conflicts on site.
There are no current plans to revise current local laws in relation to dog off-leash areas at Quarries Park and permission of dogs at Yambla Reserve soccer pitch will remain as is.
The proposal includes new sections of fencing along Yambla Street. The decision around partially fencing this site has been informed by the following reasons:
- Quarries Park is an open space, valued for its natural character – full-scale fencing may interrupt views or visually take away from this valued asset.
- Fully enclosing the dog off leash area would result in a double up of fencing provision within a close proximity to the soccer pitch.
- The intent of creating a semi-enclosed space has been achieved by including other physical features, like landscape mounding and sections of barrier fencing. This will define the space and help owners manage dogs off-leash.
- Constructing fences can lead to perceptions that a space is quarantined for a single use. Fencing may discourage other park users from using the space or passing through.
The following design elements will be included in the upgraded space:
- Sections of fencing will be located along the Yambla Street alignment to create a safety barrier between dogs and vehicular traffic.
- Landscape mounding will be constructed to strengthen the physical buffer between sporting and dog activities.
- Park signage located at the new entry off Wright Street, will display relevant rules aimed around behaviours and local laws for park users.
- A small shelter structure will be installed to protect park users during extreme weather events.
- Sub-surface drainage infrastructure and a dry creek bed will be installed to help mitigate water retention along the lower lying grounds.
Council has an allocated $320,000 (excl. GST) budget for the construction of this project. $270,000 of this budget has been funded by State Government.
Works will commence in February 2026 and are planned to be completed and re-open to the community for the end of April 2026.
An agreement, to complete works by 30 June 2026, is in place with the State Government.
