World Heritage in Yarra

The Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens

The Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens were included on the United Nations' Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage List on 1 July 2004.

Located in the City of Melbourne, Yarra sits at its east boundary.

We are represented on Heritage Victoria’s World Heritage Steering Committee.

This committee prepares the World Heritage Management Plan for the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens and has oversight of its implementation.

The Yarra planning scheme includes policies that protect significant views of the domed tower of the exhibition buildings and ensures new developments have regard for the prominence and visibility of the buildings and gardens.
