Yarra's Rainbow Policy a new framework for LGBTIQA+ inclusion
Yarra City Council has adopted a new long-term policy to strengthen support for its LGBTIQA+ communities.
Yarra City Council has adopted a new long-term policy to strengthen support for its LGBTIQA+ communities.
Rainbow Policy establishes Yarra’s ongoing commitment to equity, safety and belonging to LGBTIQA+ people.
City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Stephen Jolly said Yarra's LGBTIQA+ community helped shape the city.
"Yarra is a better place for having a strong LGBTIQA+ community in so many ways—ways that benefit everyone who calls it home,” he said.
“And that means any policy aimed to enhance it needs to have a long-term framework that we can align with each Council Plan. And that’s exactly what we've done.
“The Rainbow Policy will provide a clear and enduring framework for Council to strengthen partnerships, respond to emerging needs and champion equality for LGBTIQA+ communities across Yarra."
The draft policy was placed on exhibition from August and September, with feedback from individuals, advocacy groups and service organisations incorporated into the final version of the Policy.
“Our LGBTIQA+ communities contribute so much across all aspects of Yarra, so it’s fitting that they also provided significant contributions to the development of this policy,” said Mayor Jolly.
The Rainbow Yarra Policy sets out four interconnected priority areas that will guide whole-of-Council action:
Heritage and Celebration – recognising LGBTIQA+ histories, culture and contributions.
Inclusion and Participation – strengthening opportunities for involvement across community life and Council services.
Safer Spaces – improving safety, accessibility and respect in Council facilities, programs and public spaces.
Health and Wellbeing – addressing inequities and supporting the mental and physical health of LGBTIQA+ residents.
These priorities translate into broad commitments that will inform both ongoing programs and future initiatives across Council’s service areas, from community development and arts to public health, libraries and youth services.
