Update on Yambla sporting field upgrade

05 Dec 2024
Yambla Pavillion upgrade

Yarra City Council is upgrading the Yambla sporting field’s surface through turf and drainage works. Please note that the site cannot be used while the grass knits together. The opening of the pitch is expected to be at the start of March, although this is subject to it being finalised with the contractor and clubs to ensure the pitch is ready for play.

We are also making the soccer field safer for our residents by fencing the field to ensure soccer is contained within the designated field and providing greater delineation between the sporting fields and other activities at Quarries Park.

Council has agreed that the height of this fence be reduced from 1200mm to 1000mm based on community feedback and remains in line with Football Victoria guidelines and requirements. Council also recently announced that an additional gate on the norther fence line would be constructed to allow for easier access to the pitch for residents.

Feedback from the sporting clubs, which are growing in membership, particularly young female participants, supported the new fence as a way of mitigating challenges occurring currently between the players and other users of the site. The clubs feel that safety will also be enhanced for both spectators and players with the higher fence.

Community access around the scheduled sporting club use will be unchanged, and the community is encouraged to continue using the site for recreation.

The availability of the field will not change once the pitch upgrade is complete. The upgraded fence will assist sporting clubs during training and games only, and the pitch available all other times for public use.

In 2025, the park will be further improved. Consultation recently closed on an upgrade to the sporting pavilion due to commence construction early next year. Yarra City Council will also consult with the community in relation to construction of a new dog-park due to be constructed at Quarries Park.

The upgrade to the Yambla sporting field was included in Yarra City Council’s 2023/24 and 2024/25 budgets, which Councillors supported at the relevant Council budget meetings.

As is required by the Local Government Act 2020, the Council budget was provided to the community for their feedback during May 2024.

We are aware the community has some questions on this project, please find below a list of questions and responses to help update you on the project.

In addition, Yarra City Council had six boards around the site that outlined the changes to occur at Yambla Soccer field. The boards did outline that a new 1.2m fence would be erected at the site and provided the community with a contact at Council should they require more information.

The boards were placed around the broader Quarry Park from 18th October 2024 to mid-January 2025. We will put some new boards up to advise the project is complete, however, the site cannot be used as the grass needs to knit together.
