Statement from the Mayor on e-Scooters
Yesterday a matter between resident Mr Shane Hryhorec vs Yarra City Council was heard at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal (VCAT).
Yesterday a matter between resident Mr Shane Hryhorec vs Yarra City Council was heard at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal (VCAT) relating to the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic) and the previous eScooter trial in Yarra.
Councillors will receive an urgent briefing on this matter next Tuesday by Council staff.
It is important to note that the eScooter trial was a decision of the previous Council and since April there have been no eScooters on the streets of Yarra.
The eScooter trial came to an end in April 2025 after operators, Lime and Neuron, withdrew from the municipality following Council resolutions to recover the true cost of monitoring the eScooters.
I note that VCAT has not yet concluded the process outlined above or made a finding in relation to a breach of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).
And as requested by VCAT, Council will respond to the matters raised at VCAT in two weeks.
I’ve had very few calls from the community since April supporting a return of eScooters to the streets of Yarra.
I’d be surprised if this Council seeks to bring back eScooters during this term of Council.
