Works have been completed on a brand-new play area at Smith Reserve in Fitzroy. The new play options include:

  • slides

  • a balancing rope trail

  • a group rocker

  • a sand pit

  • monkey bars

  • a swing set

  • and nature play options

There’s also a new barbeque area, additional furniture and park shelters.

The much-improved dog off-leash area has also been completed with new fencing and an upgraded path network with lighting, but more time is needed for the grass to take root before allowing dogs on the surface.

These changes will help create a more enjoyable and secure environment for families and dog owners.

The $830,000 upgrades are part of a larger vision outlined in the Smith Reserve Concept Plan, which was adopted by Yarra City Council in March 2024. These improvements are also supported by the Victorian Government through the New and Upgraded Dog Parks program

Council held an opening event for Smith Reserve on Friday 15 August. The event was attended by Yarra's Mayor, as well as Victorian Government representative Sheena Watt MP, Member for the Northern Metropolitan Region.

The event was attended by members of the community who enjoyed with children’s entertainment, including giant bubbles and a magician.

“For a long time, Smith Reserve has been one of our most visited parks but has lacked the facilities it deserves," Mayor Jolly said.

“This park now features a much better playground, a new barbeque area, additional furniture and park shelters. And, with the help of the Victorian Government, an upgraded dog off-leash area that has been completed with new fencing, upgraded paths and improved lighting.”

“Smith Reserve now provides better use of open space in a popular inner-suburban location, new lighting and a sheltered area allows visitors and their pets a safer, more welcoming space to use year-round," Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos said.

“More dog parks across Victoria means more open spaces for families and their pets to exercise, play and enjoy close to home.”
