Road naming proposal in Fitzroy
Council is seeking to assign a name to the laneway off Argyle Street and Young Street, Fitzroy, which is informally known as “Argyle Place”.Council is committed to recognising the past and ongoing custodianship of land in the municipality by the Wurundjeri people and this policy gives primacy to the recognition of places through the use of names in the Woi wurrung language.
Council is seeking to assign a name to the laneway off Argyle Street and Young Street, Fitzroy, which is informally known as “Argyle Place”.
Council is committed to recognising the past and ongoing custodianship of land in the municipality by the Wurundjeri people and this policy gives primacy to the recognition of places through the use of names in the Woi wurrung language. Council has consulted with the Wurundjeri community and is proposing the name “Dhumbali Lane”.
Dhumbali is a word meaning ‘truth’ in the language of the Wurundjeri people. This name reflects the importance of truth-telling on reconciliation and history. It's especially meaningful in Firzroy, where activism and cultural expression have deep roots.
In considering this naming proposal, Council has been guided by its own policy and the State Government’s Guidelines for Geographic Names. If you have any feedback on this proposed name for the laneway, please let us know.
