Pedestrian upgrades delivered in Carlton North

We’re committed to making the streets of Yarra safer.

19 May 2025

We’re committed to making the streets of Yarra safer. And thanks to a $425,400 investment by the Victorian Government via their Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program, we’ve recently completed two major upgrades.

The two now-completed projects were identified by the community as part of the Carlton North Local Area Place Making study undertaken in 2019/20.

The first of these projects is a new raised pedestrian crossing which has been installed in Rathdowne Street, close to Fenwick Street. This raised pedestrian crossing, known commonly as a ‘wombat crossing’, has been installed to help manage vehicle speeds and provide improved crossing opportunities in Rathdowne Village.

The second project located at Drummond and Park Streets includes kerb extensions and another new wombat crossing. Similar to the previous project, these upgrades have been installed to manage vehicle speeds; as well as to provide improved pedestrian connections to the Linear Park, Capital City Trail Shared User Path and Brunswick South Primary School.

The funding received by Council for these projects forms part of a larger $23 million the Victorian Government in investing in the Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program. The program will improve safety in high-activity areas for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
