Upgrade Richmond Library

We need capital funding to upgrade Richmond Library.

Libraries change lives. They foster social connection, provide access to information and knowledge and provide a safe and welcoming space. Libraries enable lifelong learning. And they don’t charge admission.

Richmond Library had over 100,000 visitors last year and almost 14,000 people participated in 525 community programs on-site.

5,000 babies attended Babytime, which nurtures language and equips parents with the tools to be their child’s first teacher.

During a three-day heatwave in February 2025, Richmond Library provided refuge for more than 900 people.

Richmond library has reached capacity. It needs more floor space, more functional and flexible spaces, upgraded amenities and better accessibility.

The Victorian Government has given the City of Yarra a target of 44,000 new dwellings over the next 25 years – which will double its population. Much of this growth will be in Richmond.

Now is the time for the Victorian Government to partner with Council to upgrade Richmond Library so that it better meets the breadth of local needs now and into the future. Council cannot do this alone.

There may be an opportunity to include floorspace for other much needed local community services, such as kindergartens, childcare and maternal and child health.

These days it is very expensive to go out with friends bowling or skating, or even for a cup of coffee. So having the library there where you and your friends can do group activities and spend time together without any financial cost is vital. Not to mention, connecting with peers outside of my age group.
