Build a North Richmond community hub

Families in North Richmond need more community services.

North Richmond is one of Yarra’s fasted growing neighbourhoods, and yet the most under-serviced Already, local families need access to more kindergarten, long day care, maternal and child health and library services.

Families in North Richmond need more community services

The Victorian Government’s own abandoned 2022 Draft Master Plan for the North Richmond precinct highlighted the need for an integrated community hub to support the growing community. And it recognised the unique needs of the more vulnerable segments of the community.

And that was before the Victorian Government:

  • announced the redevelopment of the public housing estate
  • introduced the three free days of kindergarten program, and
  • gave the City of Yarra a target to grow by 44,000 new homes over the next 25 years.

In the next 10 years, North Richmond will need an estimated:

  • 150 more kindergarten places
  • 500 more long day education and care places
  • two full time maternal and child health consult rooms
  • multiple flexible spaces for child and youth programs and health and wellbeing services, and
  • 1,000 sq m of public access library floorspace.

Council has no access to land or buildings that could be repurposed or upgraded to accommodate the current or future shortfall of service delivery in North Richmond.

The Victorian Government must work in partnership with Yarra City Council and stakeholders to confirm existing and identify future service gaps, acquire a site, and build a multi-purpose community services hub in the heart of North Richmond. The new hub will be more than just a building - it would be a catalyst to creating a stronger, safer, healthier community.
