New mpox transmission in Victoria

Monday 07 August 2023

Yarra City Council is urging the community to stay vigilant, following recent transmission of mpox – formerly known as Monkeypox – within the state of Victoria.

On Thursday 3 August 2023, the Victorian Chief Health Officer issued an alert to new local cases of mpox. Yarra City Council is urging the community to stay informed and safe, and remember that mpox can affect anyone.

Mpox symptoms may include fever, chills, tiredness, headache, sore throat, and a rash that may appear up to 21 days after exposure. The virus transmits through close skin-to-skin contact, contaminated items, and respiratory droplets. More details about symptoms

If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is important to limit contact with others and seek medical attention. Inform your healthcare provider about your symptoms, wear a mask, and cover any exposed rash lesions.

A mpox vaccine is free for eligible Victorians, offering an essential line of defence against the virus.

While recent cases have been predominantly among men who have sex with men, mpox can affect anyone.
