Community Grants
Yarra Council provides a range of community grants to provide support to local groups and community initiatives.

Visy Community Grants
Council has partnered with Visy to offer grants to local social enterprises looking to expand or start up in Yarra.
A pool of $50,000 is available that is expected to be distributed to between four and six different projects.
Applicants must be Not-for-Profit community groups with Deductible Gift Recipient status (DGR).
Funding will be provided to support projects that will run in the 2012/13 financial year. Funding can go towards:
- Training costs relevant to the social enterprise
- Staff wages
- Website development
- IT equipment
- Other items that are critical to ensuring the social enterprise is viable

Applications open on Monday 30 January 2012 and can be completed online at via http://cityofyarra.smartygrants.com.au/ (A live form will appear on this site on 30 January).
Applicants are encouraged to contact Council’s Community Grants Officers, Nina Collins on 9205 5146 or Denise Fox on 9205 5170 to discuss their application before applying.
Applications close on Friday 9 March at 5pm. All applicants will be notified in writing of the success of their application in mid-April.
Annual Grants 2012
Council’s Annual Grants provide financial and in-kind support for community initiatives and projects that address local needs and enhance the health and wellbeing of the local community.
Grants are available in the areas of arts and culture, community development, sport and recreation, youth and middle years, community justice and the environment.
At its October meeting, Council awarded $575,857 in grants funding to 122 projects that will run in 2012. The Neighbourhood Justice Centre contributed $54,627 to the total amount.

Council received a total of 163 applications for the 2012 Annual Grants, which were assessed in six stages by a panel comprising Council officers and representatives from the community.
For the first time, applications were submitted and assessed online, which helped to streamline the grants process.
Investing in Community Grants
Investing in Community Grants offer a pool of more than $200,000 per year for not-for-profit organisations to run large-scale community programs over three years. The grants are targeted at projects that are in line with key priority areas for Council.
At its October meeting, Council awarded grants to 10 individual projects that will run from 2012 – 2014.

Applications were reviewed by a panel of external community experts. Community groups and organisations were encouraged to submit an Expression of Interest in mid 2011, with successful applicants invited to develop and submit a full application by August 2011.
Council will host a ceremony on 9 December 2011 to celebrate recipients of the Investing in Community Grants.
Small Unexpected Project Grants (formerly Out-of-Time Grants)
The Small Unexpected Project Grants respond to requests for funding that fall outside the Annual Grants.
Not-for-profit groups with unanticipated and emerging issues that meet the grant criteria can apply for Small Unexpected Project Grants. Small Unexpected Project Grants are also available to support individual artists and art workers. Individuals must meet the criteria for the Annual Grants Arts Development stream.
Applications can be made at any time of the year, however, funding for each grant is limited to $100 - $500 per application.
Council has a limited grant pool for small and unexpected projects. Applicants can only receive one Small Unexpected Project Grant allocation per financial year.

Emerging Issues Grants – Health & Wellbeing 2011-12
Council’s Emerging Issues Grants are awarded every two years as part of Council’s wider Community Grants Program. The Emerging Issues Grants provide not-for-profit organisations with up to $40,000 each year to implement community-based projects.
The 2011-2012 grants were awarded to projects that addressed the main health identified in the Health Plan 2009-2013 which are:
- healthier eating and a physically active community
- reducing and minimising harm from tobacco, alcohol and other drugs
- improving mental health, and
- improving the health of Indigenous Australians.
The following five local organisations were successful in receiving an Emerging Issues Grant:

Cultivating Community – Yarra Food Web
This project aims to work towards a more sustainable, cohesive and equitable approach to the food system for the City of Yarra.

Drummond Street Services – Hands on Parenting Education Program – HOPE
HOPE aims to identify isolated and at risk parents in Collingwood who need support.

North Yarra Community Health – Billabong BBQ Coordinator
The Billabong BBQ Coordinator will strengthen community participation at the Billabong BBQ.

Westside Circus – Move It (You Know You Want To)
This project aims to increase opportunities for personal development, physical activity, creative expression and food appreciation for young people in Yarra.

Wheelchair Sports Victoria - Access Sport, Access Health
This project will design and implement sport and recreation programs that meet the participation needs of people with a disability.
