On Thursday 4 April, the Victorian Government announced a further 6-month extension of the Victorian Government’s e-scooter trial currently operating in the City of Yarra, the City of Melbourne, and the City of Port Phillip since 2022.

An extension of the trial means the Yarra community will continue to have access to this accessible, eco-friendly and cost-effective transport option.

With almost 8 million trips recorded so far across the 3 trial areas – the fastest take-up of any Australian city – it’s clear e-scooters are a popular way of getting of around.

We know there are concerns about e-scooters, particularly around safety, including people riding on the footpath and parking – and we take these concerns seriously.

Our ongoing dialogue with the Victorian Government is focused on refining the trial to ensure that e-scooters complement our city’s transport solutions without compromising safety.

In addition, we have taken measures to address concerns include educating e-scooter users about road rules and proper parking etiquette, restricting e-scooter usage and parking in prohibited areas and working with other Councils to design designated parking bays.

As the trial progresses, the safety and accessibility of our streets for all users remains our top priority.
