Getting ready for heavy rain - what you need to know

The State Emergency Service (SES) has issued a severe weather warning for heavy rain in Victoria. Widespread flooding is expected to occur across most of Victoria from today through to Sunday. 

The SES is the lead agency in flood response. For any flood or storm emergencies, contact the SES on 132 500.

For life threatening emergencies, call Triple Zero – 000.

7 Things to do TODAY

  1. Make sure all important documents/significant items are off the floor
  2. Make sure all drains around your house are clean of debris
  3. Make sure your family and pets are safe
  4. Empty your water tank
  5. Don't park your car in a basement car park
  6. Never walk, ride or drive through floodwater
  7. Call the SES (132 500) if you need help

Stay safe in flooded areas

  • Never walk, ride or drive through floodwater
  • Never allow children to play in floodwater
  • Stay away from waterways and stormwater drains during and after heavy rain
  • Keep well clear of fallen power lines
  • Be aware that heavy rainfall increases the potential for landslides and debris across roads.

Who to contact for assistance during the storm

SES on 132 500 for:

  • Flooding or damage to private property
  • Tree debris or other hazards on roads
  • Fallen power lines

Triple Zero - 000 for any life threatening emergencies.

Yarra Council afterhours emergency service on 9205 5555 for:

  • Trees fallen down in parks or public spaces

Our local road network forms part of our drainage system. It is expected that some roads will flood during very heavy rainfall. If you are concerned about flood waters in roads or laneways, you can contact us on 9205 5555.

Remember never to walk, ride or drive through floodwater.

Getting around Yarra

The expected heavy rain will cause flooding along shared trails in Yarra and beyond, from Friday until Monday. 

Walkers, runners and people riding bikes should avoid using shared paths and not enter flooded paths, or travel beyond access control (flood) gates - located at Dights Falls, Hall Reserve and Bundara Street Park.

Flooding will occur at the following locations:

Main Yarra Trail:

  • Burnley Harbour, Mary Street, Burnley
  • Palmer/Burnley Street to Victoria Street, Abbotsford
  • Clarke Street, Abbotsford
  • Dights Falls to Johnston Street, Abbotsford

Merri Creek Trail:

  • High Street to Heidelberg Road, Clifton Hill & Northcote
  • St Georges Road to Sumner Park, North Fitzroy and Brunswick East

Flooding is also very likely to occur: along north and south banks of Yarra River at South Yarra, Southbank, Docklands, Jolimont and City; along Moonee Ponds Creek from Parkville to Docklands; and Darebin Creek Trail from Preston to Alphington.
