Keep Victoria Beautiful has recognised the City of Yarra as the Sustainable City of the Year (2016) at a ceremony on Friday 15 July 2016 at the State Library of Victoria.

The major award win was based on 15 Yarra projects – all of which were described as “of an excellent standard”.

Yarra also won three out of eight category awards including the Community Action and Leadership Award for Yarra’s innovative Roads to Parks program which has previously won a national award.

Other category wins were the Cultural Heritage Award for the restoration of the Collingwood Town Hall and the Active Schools Award won by Melbourne Girls College.

Yarra was shortlisted for 11 projects across eight categories in the annual Sustainable Cities Awards, which encourage, motivate and celebrate sustainability achievements of metropolitan communities across Australia.

Organised by Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria, the prestigious award recognises Yarra’s role in leading the local government sector in sustainability, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to the values and aspirations of the Yarra community.

Mayor Roberto Colanzi said this award is a testament to Council’s vision for Yarra to be a truly sustainable city.

“Council has invested significant resources into taking action in the areas of climate action, including but not limited to the, built environment and sustainable transport, water sensitive urban design, and other measures.” Mayor Colanzi said.

“Council has set and is striving to meet ambitious environmental targets across all these environmental areas and this award recognizes the hard work undertaken by Council”

In addition to the three award winning projects, Yarra was also shortlisted for the following:

University of Melbourne Early Learning Centre for the Active Schools Award
Yarra Riverkeeper Association for the Clean Beach/Waterways Award
Yarra City Council’s promotion of Yarra's unique Aboriginal Cultural Heritage for the Cultural Heritage Award

This year marked the second time Yarra has taken out the overall award, having been named Sustainable City of the Year in 2011.

Yarra will go on to represent Victoria in the national awards later this year.
