Yarra appoints new CEO
11 May 2012
Yarra City Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Vijaya Vaidyanath as its new Chief Executive.
Ms Vaidyanath will take over the helm at Yarra in late June / early July.
She has extensive international experience in Local Government and the banking sector. She is renowned for her innovation, integrity, inspiring leadership style and ability to deliver results.
Her stellar career includes Chief Executive of New Zealand’s fifth largest Council, Waitakere City (2008-10) and of New Zealand’s fastest growing council, Rodney District (2003-08). Born in India, she served for 14 years with the Reserve Bank of India, including five years as General Manager.
Since moving from New Zealand to Australia in 2011, Ms Vaidyanath has been Director of Corporate and Business Services at Darebin City Council. In this role, she was responsible for the financial management of Council, advancing information technology, economic development, civic compliance, communications and assets and property.
Her qualifications are exemplary – she is a Senior Executive Fellow of the John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University; a Master of Business Administration (Corporate Strategy and Planning, International management) at JMKatz Graduate School of Business in Pittsburgh; Master of Arts (Economics) and a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) at the University of Bangalore.
Ms Vaidyanath’s appointment follows the resignation of Dr Andi Diamond who left Yarra in April to take up a position as Chief Executive at the City of Monash.
Mayor Geoff Barbour welcomed Ms Vaidyanath to Yarra saying she would bring vision and enthusiasm to the CEO role, building on the excellent work undertaken by Dr Diamond.
“We had a very impressive field of candidates but I must say that Ms Vaidyanath stood out for the passion, experience and leadership she will bring to Yarra,” Cr Barbour said.
“She also demonstrated a style of management based on values, open communication, personal integrity and honesty at all levels – all qualities we want in our new CEO," he said.
Cr Barbour said Councillors were very much looking forward to working with Ms Vaidyanath in the months and years ahead.
Ms Vaidyanath said of her appointment, “I am genuinely excited to be part of Melbourne’s most dynamic and inclusive municipality. The vision and values of Yarra City Council resonate well with my personal values. The opportunity to work with elected members, staff and most of all the wider community of Yarra is vitalising. I can’t wait to begin serving the City of Yarra”.
