Taste Sensations 1

Enjoy some of the sights as you eat your way around Richmond.

From the city centre, take the number 70 (Wattle Park) tram to Swan Street. Start with a sweet breakfast from the famous Hellas Cake Shop in Lennox Street (near the corner of Swan Street). Located in this very spot since 1956 the Hellas Cake Shop has been baking Greek and Middlle Eastern treats for over 50 years. Mouth-watering baklava is the Hellas speciality.

For generations Swan Street has been a local attraction, with many of its shops and services catering for the local community. In the streets surrounding this busy thoroughfare, factories and warehouses have been converted into design studios and town houses, apartments and galleries.

On Tanner Street you’ll find the William Mora Galleries, where there are monthly exhibitions of emerging and established indigenous and non-indigenous artists. The building combines galleries with a residence for William Mora and his family, and a studio for his mother, renowned Australian artist Mirka Mora.

There are plenty of options for lunch in Richmond, and one of the best has to be the Richmond Hill Café and Larder, which has become something of a Melbourne institution. From Tanner Street turn left into Lennox Street and walk up to Bridge Road. The Richmond Hill Café and Larder uses the freshest local ingredients for its beautiful yet simple Mediterranean-style cuisine. The larder, next to the café, is a food haven with an extraordinary range of local and international cheeses, as well as produce, locally-made chocolates and cookbooks.

After lunch, head for the nominated meeting place to join Bernadette Alibrando’s walk to art tour for an artistic walking exploration of art around Melbourne. Go behind the scenes to uncover Melbournes creative expression. At the end of the three-hour expedition chat about your experiences over a drink and a snack at one of Melbourne’s very cool bars.

All that walking will have built up an appetite, so head back to Richmond and Dizzys Jazz Club. From the city, take a number 70 (Wattle Park) tram along Flinders Street to stop 14 (corner of Swan and Burnley Streets). Enjoy a variety of delicious dishes while soaking up the atmosphere and some of the best Australian and international jazz performers.
