Edinburgh Gardens
Alfred Crescent, Fitzroy North 3068
Melways ref: 2C, D1
Edinburgh Gardens, located in the heart of North Fitzroy, is approximately 24 hectares in size. The park has a number of facilities, including barbeques, tennis courts, a basketball court, playground, table tennis table and sports field.
Edinburgh Gardens is the former home of Fitzroy Football Club. Games were played from 1883 on the sportsground now known as W.T Peterson Community Oval. The grandstand surrounding the oval dates back to the late-19th century. Other historical features include a stone drinking fountain, period park light fittings, a rotunda and war memorial.
You'll find plenty of open lawn areas, shady and sheltered spots, structural formal avenue plantings and a pathway network connecting the surrounding networks and park facilities. Edinburgh Gardens is easily accessible by public transport, with Brunswick Street bordering the west side of the park. It also provides access to the Main Yarra Trail.
W.T. Peterson Oval Sports Lighting Project
Council will install four sports lights and poles around the oval in March 2012.
The new lights are expected to reduce light spill on to sections of the park surrounding the oval during winter sports training sessions. The lights will be required to be turned off by 9.30pm each night.
The improved lights should open up more of the playing surface for use in the evenings, reducing wear and tear across the turf. The existing two poles and light sets on the Freeman Street side of the ground will be re-used at another site.
During construction, access to parts of the park may be restricted. Council apologises for the inconvenience. For further information, please contact Mark Donnellan on 9205 5724 or at mark.donnellan@yarracity.vic.gov.au
Raingarden rectification works
From April 2012, Council and Melbourne Water will be carrying out rectification works on the Edinburgh Gardens raingarden. More information about those works is available on the Edinburgh Gardens Raingarden webpage.
Recent works/additions in the park
In August 2010, a new playground was opened in the park. The playground includes a climbing spider net and large chalk boards for children to draw on. It is complemented by a new picnic table and double BBQ.
In June 2011, a permanent, all weather table-tennis table was installed in the park. The table is located behind the Maternal and Child Health Care centre at the north-west end of the park.
In February 2012, the basketball court was repainted to improve the grip of the surface. This work followed a second hoop being installed in late 2011.
