How to compost food scraps

Half of the waste that Yarra homes send to landfill is food. Instead of it sitting there, producing large quantities of methane and carbon emissions, we want to do something with it.

You will have received (if you don’t already have one) a bright green-lidded food and organic waste wheelie bin.

Search tip: If you’re looking for information about how to recycle a specific item, press the Ctrl and F keys at the same time to bring up a search box. Then type in the item you’re looking for. If it is listed on the page it will be highlighted for you. If you’re searching on your phone, use the Find on Page function of your search engine.

In this bin, you can put:

  • Food scraps
    • Fruit and vegetables, bread, seafood, meat, dairy, eggs, tea leaves (no bags) and coffee grind
  • Garden waste
    • Grass clipping, plants, weeds, prunings, leaves, flowers

You can’t put in:

  • Plastic
  • Cardboard
  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Polystyrene
  • Rubber
  • Pet faeces
  • Animal remains
  • Large/heavy branches
  • Cooking oil
  • Plastic bags/bin liners including compostable or biodegradable bags or products like biodegradable cutlery and crockery
  • Treated wood/timber
  • Nappies

Where does my food waste go?

Your food waste will be turned into nutritious compost that will help to keep Yarra green.
