Rising High

A free music program for young people in the music studio. Professional music producers will help you write your own lyrics, and teach you production skills to lay down your own beats. The Rising High studio has two vocal rooms, a band room and a production space.

  • Mondays (during school term) for young people aged 15 to 25, 4pm to 7pm
  • Fridays (during school term) for young people aged 12 to 25, 4pm to 6pm

Uprising Theatre

Participants use masks, comedy and dance to explore characters and worlds, as well as the topics you feel passionate about. No drama experience necessary, just a willingness to have a go and have fun. This program is suitable for children aged 8 to 12 years.

  • Wednesdays (during school term), 3.30pm to 4pm at The Factory, Belgium Avenue, Richmond

DJ Skills program

Mentored by dance music industry professional DJs and producers, who will teach you the ins and outs of being a skilled and successful DJ, whether you are a beginner or more advanced. For female and gender diverse young people, aged 12 to 25 years.

  • Wednesdays (during school term), 4pm to 6pm at the Yarra Youth Centre

Fashion and textile design

Providing young people aged 12 to 25 with the opportunity to learn fashion design, garment making, textile design, accessory design and the ins and outs of Melbourne’s fashion industry from experts in the industry. No experience is required just the willingness to learn and create fabulous items for the catwalk, markets and their own wardrobe.

  • Thursdays (during school term), 4pm to 6pm at the Yarra Youth Centre

Deep Fried Art

An informal art jam for young people aged 12 to 25. Young artists are encouraged to pursue personal projects in an open studio environment with their peers and early career artists, or they can be guided through a class project. From illustration, design, zones, sculpture, painting to short films, video art and animation... It’s up to you – let your creative juices flow.

  • Fridays (during school term), 4pm to 6pm 


An online based community of young people, who are interested in learning the ins and outs of event management, and running their own music and cultural events in Yarra.

Young people learn various production skills including booking artists and liaising with booking agents, stage management, sound engineering, finance and budgeting, promotions and ultimately, running a successful event.

Artist in Residence

Our Artist in Residence program gives early-career artists aged between 20 and 25 years the opportunity to take up a shared residency in the studio space at our Block Studios in Fitzroy, free of charge.

Mentoring for early career artists

An opportunity for young emerging artists to receive one on one mentoring from established artists.

This is an appointment based program, and helps young people aged 17 to 25 years of age get advice and direction on producing their own art, as well as the curating and business side of the art world.

Other opportunities

The Yarra Youth Services team also deliver creative outreach workshops in secondary schools and community organisations focusing on street art, street art murals, photography, printmaking and other artistic mediums. We also provide opportunities for young emerging artists to showcase their work publicly through projects such as a seasonal mural program in Edinburgh Gardens, and the annual Capture Yarra photography competition.
