Arts and Music

Art leaning against a wall

Rising High

Rising High is a free music program for young people aged 12 to 25 years of age in our brand new music studio. Professional music producers will help you write your own lyrics, and teach you production skills to lay down your own beats

The studio - with 2 vocal rooms, a band room plus production space - is open 3 afternoons each week during school terms:

  • Mondays are predominantly for hip hop and production;
  • Wednesdays allow for more intensive one on one time; and
  • Fridays are more of an open studio where all music tastes and genres are welcome.

FReeZA

FReeZA is an online based community of young people, who are interested in learning the ins and outs of event management, and running their own music and cultural events in Yarra.

You get to learn various skills including booking artists and liaising with booking agents, stage management, sound engineering, finance and budgeting, promotions and ultimately, running a successful event.

It's free to join the committee, and we are always looking out for new committed members! Check out our Facebook page to see some of the events the FreeZA committee puts on.

DJ Skills Program

Come down and be mentored by dance music industry professional DJs and producers, who will teach you the ins and outs of being a skilled and successful DJ, whether you are a beginner or more advanced. For female and gender diverse young people, aged 12 to 25 years.

Artist in Residence

Artist in Residence (AIR) is a program where early career artists aged 18 to 25 years of age can apply to take up a 6 month shared residence in our own art studio, Block Studios.

The Artist in Residence program presents opportunities to early career artists aged 20 to 25 years to develop a body of work and develop their studio practice.

Expressions of Interest can be completed online. Varied exhibition and presentation outcomes form part of this residency.

Open Studio

Pursue personal projects in an open studio environment with peers and emerging artists on Tuesdays. The Block Studio resident artists will work with participants through varied art practices from still life to digital illustration.

Mentoring for Early Career Artists

An opportunity for young emerging artists to receive one on one mentoring from established artists.

This is an appointment based program, and helps young people aged 17 to 25 years of age get advice and direction on producing their own art, as well as the curating and business side of the art world.

Fashion and Textile Design

This program provides young people aged 12 to 25 years of age the opportunity to learn fashion design, garment making, textile design and accessory design from our fashion staff who have experience working in the fashion industry in Melbourne, London and Paris.

Head to Hand

Head to Hand gives young people aged 12 to 25 years interested in writing, illustrating and comic book production the chance to learn from various emerging artists.  Develop and publish drawings and stories through weekly workshops that bring your narratives to life in publishing and practice.

Uprising Theatre

Uprising Theatre will collaborate with the Collingwood Children’s Farm to create a puppet extravaganza as part of the 2018 Winter Solstice. Participants will use masks, comedy and dance to explore characters and worlds, as well as the topics you feel passionate about. No drama experience necessary, just a willingness to have a go and have fun. This program is suitable for children aged 8 to 12 years.

Other Opportunities

The Yarra Youth Services team also deliver creative outreach workshops in secondary schools and community organisations focusing on street art, street art murals, photography, printmaking and other artistic mediums. We also provide opportunities for young emerging artists to showcase their work publicly through projects such as a seasonal mural program in Edinburgh Gardens, and the annual Capture Yarra photography competition.
