Minor changes to recycling collection

From Friday 22 March you may notice very minor changes to your recycling collection.

Key points to remember:

  • Your recycling will continue to be collected on the same day of the week.
  • Time of collection may vary so please put your bin out the night before.
  • Call us on 9205 5555 if your recycling bin isn’t collected by 4pm.

These minor changes follow our move to a new contractor. Four Seasons is now responsible for collection of both rubbish and recycling.

Recycling will continue to be collected and processed as normal, and there are no plans to send any of this material to landfill.

Yarra has not been affected by problems at the SMK recycling depots in Coolaroo and Laverton North.

Are there any changes to other collection services (rubbish, organics, hard waste)?

What should I do if my recycling bin has been missed?

Where does my recycling go?
Your recycling is sent to a processing facility (known as a materials recovery facility or MRF) in Dandenong. Here the valuable recyclable materials paper, card, steel, aluminium, glass and plastic are sorted from any contamination. The materials are then sold on the domestic and global market for processing into new products.

Is Yarra’s recycling going to landfill?
No. Recycling is being processed as normal, and this material is not being sent to landfill. Yarra is not among the councils impacted by the recent suspension of SKM recycling depots in Coolaroo and Laverton North.

Why are my rubbish and recycling bins both being collected by Four Seasons?
Our contract with Visy came to an end earlier this year and Four Seasons is now responsible for collection of both rubbish and recycling. Recycling is being processed as normal, and none of this material is being sent to landfill.

What is the recycling crisis and what is Yarra doing about it?
The entire local government sector faces recycling challenges. Much of the material collected from households is sold to Asia for recycling. However, Asia now pays less for recycling that is ‘contaminated’ by non-recyclable materials, like glass fragments, plastic bags, food and liquids. We are currently working with State and Local Governments – as well as industry groups and our local community – to explore ways to improve the quality of recycling, maximise resource recovery, and reduce our reliance on overseas markets.
