Council has received a number of enquiries about the removal of car parking spaces.
Prioritising active and sustainable transport is a key pillar of the Transport Strategy and aims to improve the safe flow of transport and movement across our city as our population rapidly grows.
There are currently no scheduled upgrades to priority cycling routes by Council that involve replacement of angled parking with parallel car parking in Fitzroy.
In addition, reports that Council plans to remove 66% of car parking in Yarra are incorrect.
The replacement of angled car parking with parallel parking along high priority cycling routes is an action identified in Yarra’s Transport Strategy 2022-32 which aims to improve road safety and amenity for everyone across the municipality. This does not mean however that all angled car parking will be replaced or removed – assessment is made on a case-by-case basis.
The City of Yarra Transport Strategy 2022-32 was developed with extensive community consultation and endorsed unanimously by Councillors in July 2022.
The Strategy was also informed by the 2036 Community Vision engagement process in which 86% of respondents wanted to see “a lot more active and sustainable transport options” rather than “a lot more cars and parking spaces”.
The implementation plan, the Transport Action Plan 2024-34 was also unanimously endorsed by Councillors in March this year.
