Purple-lid glass bin

Find out what glass items can be put in your purple-lid bin.

When you don't separate glass from other recyclables, that glass breaks into small pieces and gets embedded into plastics and paper. This reduces our ability to recycle as much of these other materials once they are contaminated with fine glass.

To prevent this from happening, you can recycle glass bottles and jars by putting them in your purple-lid glass bin.

Separating glass jars and bottles allows us to make new glass products such as bottles and jars.

You can also bring any excess glass bottles or jars to our Recycling Drop-off Centre in Clifton Hill.

Your glass bin

All Yarra residents now have an 80-litre purple-lid glass bin. This bin is for glass only.

If you live in an apartment block, you'll have a shared bin.

If you are a business in Yarra currently using our rubbish and recycling service you'll also have an 80-litre glass bin.

How to use the bin

  • Make sure all jars and bottles are empty and clean.
  • Remove lids from all jars and bottles.
  • Metal lids can go in the yellow-lid recycling bin, but all other lids should go in the rubbish bin.
  • Any bottles that contain cigarette butts will be sent to landfill.
  • You don't need to remove labels.

The following items must be clean and have no lids to be suitable for your purple bin:

  • Pasta sauce jars
  • Jam and other condiment jars
  • Wine bottles
  • Beer bottles
  • Spirit (alcohol) bottles
  • Olive oil and sauce bottles.

We accept broken bottles from this list.

Different types of glass melt at different temperatures, and not all can be recycled. We can’t accept the following in the glass bin:

  • Drinking glasses
  • Window glass
  • Broken light bulbs
  • Vases
  • Perfume or makeup containers
  • Plastic lids, corks or bottle tops.

These items belong in your red-lid rubbish bin.
