Smart public housing project

Learn more about our program to increase access to digital connectivity, tools and training.

We have partnered across government, not-for-profit and industry to support public housing communities with increased access to digital connectivity, tools and training.

As COVID-19 continues to push services online, connectivity has become an essential part of how we work, learn, socialise, connect and play.

Not everyone has the resources they need to engage in this digital world.

This digital divide is evident within our public housing communities where people without access to the internet, digital skills, and fit-for-purpose devices are increasingly being left behind.

What are we doing?

We have established a working group to deliver the Smart Public Housing Project, to address the barriers to digital connectivity and help more people participate.

We are investigating several opportunities including:

  • free WiFi in public housing community areas
  • culturally specific digital education
  • computer recycling and repurposing programs
  • Community Connections Hub, which links people with digital training, education and employment opportunities
