Things we consider
Things that are good
- The item was published in the last 2 years (including reissues).
- The item does not cost more than $55 for fiction and $75 for non-fiction.
- The item is in print and readily available from our library suppliers.
- The item has current or ongoing interest to the community.
- The physical item is of a good quality, and in a format we can manage.
If the item is more than 2 years old or falls outside our collection development policy [ PDF, 1.01 MB] , please consider an inter-library loan. Fees may apply.
Things we avoid
- The item is a textbook (school or university, technical or professional).
- The item is only available in formats we do not manage (e.g. mini-books or spiral binding).
- The item is an unclassified film or prohibited by law (e.g. pornography).
- Items due for publication or release (if the request is made more than 3 months in advance).
How to suggest an item
To suggest an item for our collection, fill out our suggest an item form.
We reserve the right to make final decisions based on professional judgement, cost, relevance and potential use of any suggested materials.
After you've applied
If the item is approved to be added to our collection
If a suggested item is selected, we'll place a hold (reservation) on the item on your behalf. Most items are acquired within a 3-month timeframe, but some may take longer, depending on availability.
If the item is not approved
If an item is not selected for acquisition, we will let you know via email. You may want to consider an inter-library loan.
