Yarra Council endorses its first LGBTIQ+ advisory Committee

Yarra Council has endorsed the formation of the Rainbow Advisory Committee, our first LGBTIQ+ advisory committee. 

The Committee will provide advice and support to council on issues affecting the LGBTIQ+ community. 

One of the key objectives for the Rainbow Advisory Committee is to help implement Yarra’s LGBTIQ+ Strategy 2021-2024. 

The Committee also provides a formal voice for the LGBTIQ+ community and a process for consultation and an exchange of views.

Who are the members?

The Committee is to be made up of two Councillors and a further fourteen community members, including:

  • up to ten members of the Yarra community 
  • a minimum of two representatives from community organisations that support Yarra’s LGBTIQ+ community 
  • a minimum of two representatives from Yarra’s LGBTIQ+ business community.

Where possible, committee members will reflect the diversity of the LGBTIQ+ community including:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 
  • people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds 
  • people with a disability 
  • people from variety of life stages 
  • people from different locations across the municipality.

The Chairperson will alternate among designated Councillors and meetings will take place six times per year.
