Remembrance Day 2020

Tuesday 10 November 2020

Black and white pictures of returned soldiers with a red overlay

Every year at the eleventh hour of the eleventh month, we pause to remember those men and women who have died or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations.

At 11am on 11 November 1918, gunfire ceased after more than four years of continuous fighting. On this day, we remember the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts on November 11 every year. Remembrance Day is a time for us to recognise those who served our country and pay respect to fallen and returned soldiers.

While we're unable to mark this year’s Remembrance Day by gathering together here in Yarra, we encourage you to join the Shrine of Remembrance for an online commemorative broadcast.

WW1 Field Gun at Barkly Gardens War Memorial

Last year, we commemorated Remembrance Day as we unveiled the completed project with the RSL to restore and install a rare, historic WW1 Field Gun, captured by Australian troops in 1918. The field gun is installed at the Barkly Gardens War Memorial in Richmond for public display.

It was originally gifted to the City of Collingwood, and displayed in the Darling Gardens for more than 90 years. It was removed in 2013, when it was removed due to its dilapidated state. Last year, we asked the community about the most appropriate home for this gun, which was restored by the RSL. Most people told us Barkly Gardens, which is home to a significant war memorial, is the most appropriate home.
