Helping others recycle right
Tuesday 03 March 2020
Are you a recycling champion? If you’re on a mission to get friends, family, your partner or housemates to recycle right too, check out these top tips.
Tell them why
When we sort waste right, we reduce emissions from landfill and contribute to building a local circular economy. And your bins get picked up! It’s all good stuff.
Reminding people why they should make the effort might be just what they need to build positive habits – and then it feels like no effort at all!
We’ve got more on the rationale behind our changes if you or a neighbour or housemate wants to read more.
In short(ish!), remember, with your help, the Yarra Waste Revolution is already:
- making our recycled materials cleaner and more valuable, ensuring that they get a new life
- resulting in less waste going to landfill, where we are very quickly running out of space
- reducing our emissions as a community, and lessening our contribution to climate change.
Sort it out together
Let others know you’re happy to answer questions about what can (and can’t go) in each bin. Especially if this waste sorting process is new to them (say, if they’ve just moved in).
Not everyone is a recycling nerd (hey, no judgement!), so offer your advice. We know people want to do the right thing, they just might not know what that is in our revolutionary new system.
You could set up a “sort it out together” bin, in which people put tricky items (that don’t smell or leak) and sort it out later together. How satisfying is that!
Put up posters
We’ve created posters that summarise what can and can’t go in each bin. Print them out and put them next to your bins.
Or get creative (or get your kids to be!) and make your own.
