Man driving forklift with bale of paper

Wondered what happens to your recycling after it’s collected from your yellow-lidded bin?

We recently visited our recycling processor, Australian Paper Recovery, in Laverton and watched the recycling collected that week being processed.

So, what happens to each of the streams of your recyclables?

  • Paper is turned into egg cartons and apple trays.
  • Cardboard is turned back into cardboard and cardboard packaging.
  • Plastic bottles are turned into new plastic bottles.
  • Aluminium cans become new aluminium cans.
  • Steel tins are turned into new steel.
  • Milk bottles are turned into CHEP plastic pallets.
  • Plastic bottles of laundry and kitchen products are turned into new bottles for these products.

Everything is recycled in Victoria except for the PET bottles, which are recycled in New South Wales.

You can see all the photos from the visit in our trial Facebook group. By becoming a member of our online community you can ask us questions and learn from other trial participants.
