Business Profile: Mr Piccolo

We talk to Anthony LoPiccolo about his new Yarra business Piccolino pizza and gnocchi bar in North Fitzroy. You might have heard of Anthony's first business, Mr Piccolo, located in Kensington village for the past three years.

What made you decide to open Piccolino in Fitzroy north?

Fitzroy North and Kensington share very similar village characteristics in spite of their close proximity to the CDB, with a huge focus on the community; you can just feel it in the air. (There's) a very urban feeling amongst the people… a bit diverse – we love that!!

When did you know it was the right time to expand?

"Piccolino is the boundary-pushing younger sibling of her ‘big bro’ Mr Piccolo... The idea to expand was quite organic really. An opportunity presented itself in North Fitzroy, so we thought we’d have a go. Pizza & Gnocchi are two classic faves."

What was the most challenging part of expanding the business/ opening in Fitzroy?

I guess wanting to be certain that the brand execution of ‘what we do and love’ sits comfortably amongst the other great food and beverage offerings already established within the area.

Do you have one piece of advice to give a business looking to expand?

Many of my friends say that I’m either really, really smart, or just really, really stupid – sometimes I'm not even sure. But seriously, it’s important to dot your ‘I’s and cross your ‘T’s. And believe in your product - at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about.

Can you recommend any other Yarra businesses nearby?

Next door - Loafer. They do A-mazing breads. Best in the neighbourhood.
