Collingwood Leisure Centre pool tile works and temporary closure

Thursday 15 November 2018

The Collingwood Leisure Centre pool will be closed for three months from December, while we take care of essential repairs. Single and patches of tiles have come away from the pool walls, which now require replacement.

The pool, spa, and sauna will close on Saturday 22 December 2018 and reopen late March 2019.

During this time you’ll still be able to visit the gym, group exercise studio, spin room and change rooms, which aren’t affected by these works and will remain open.

The pools, spas, saunas and steam rooms at Fitzroy Swimming Pool and Richmond Recreation Centre will also remain open over the summer months. Collingwood Leisure Centre members, visit pass holders and casual visitors are all very welcome.

We understand the closure will have an impact on many pool users, and we apologise for the disappointment and inconvenience caused.

We will keep you updated on the Yarra Leisure news page. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch at [email protected] or 9205 5522.

Learn to Swim and Open Age Squad programs

Yarra Leisure will not run a Learn to Swim program at Collingwood Leisure Centre in Term 1, 2019.

Current students in our Learn to Swim program are encouraged to move to lessons at either Fitzroy Swimming Pool or Richmond Recreation Centre.

The program will return to Collingwood Leisure Centre in Term 2, 2019 commencing Tuesday 23 April 2019.

An amended Open Age Squad timetable will run for the period of the Collingwood Leisure Centre pool closure. View the amended squad timetable effective Term 1 2019.

If you or your child is enrolled in one of these programs, you will have a few options to choose from.

Move to lessons at either Fitzroy Swimming Pool or Richmond Recreation Centre

For Learn to Swim and District/Fit Squad program students interested in attending lessons at either Fitzroy Swimming Pool or Richmond Recreation Centre for Term 1 2019 please fill out the online form by Sunday 2 December 2018.

Suspend the lessons until Term 2 2019

Learn to Swim and District/Fit squad program students can suspend their lessons until the Collingwood Leisure Centre pool reopens next year for Term 2 2019 (commencing Tuesday 23 April 2019). This will happen automatically if we don’t hear from you by Sunday 2 December 2018. We’ll update you about your Term 2 enrolment in March 2019.

Members and multi-visit pass holders

Members and multi visit pass holders will be able to use the pools, spas and saunas at Fitzroy Swimming Pool and Richmond Recreation Centre. You can also request to suspend your membership, or extend your multi visit pass expiry date, until the Collingwood pool reopens in late March 2019. Please email us if you would like to do this.

Aqua group exercise classes

We’re adding extra Aqua classes at Richmond Recreation Centre and Fitzroy Swimming Pool during the period of the works. Further information will be provided once these sessions are confirmed and they will be included in the Christmas/New Year and January 2019 timetables.

Women Making Waves program

A dry version of the Women Making Waves  program will recommence after the Christmas/New Year break on Saturday 12 January. This will include access to the gym and a Freestyle Movement class held in the Group Fitness Studio at 6.45pm. This class will run for the duration of the pool closure.

The normal program, with aquatic activities, will run again from Saturday 6 April once the Collingwood Pool reopens.

What will the works involve?

The works to the pools will include:

  • Removal of existing tiles and retiling of all walls and floors in the 25m pool, Leisure pool, associated ramp and toddlers pool.
  • Installation of new steps in the Leisure pool as part of the ongoing safety improvement works that commenced in May 2018.

During this time, additional planned preventative maintenance works will take place to minimise future disruptions.

Why are these works required?

In mid to late 2017 single and large patches of tiles started to come away and displace from the pool wall shell due to issues with the tile adhesive.

Temporary maintenance repairs have been undertaken for the past year with works now required to the entire pool to rectify and address this issue permanently.
